Letting unpitch research your business

Fill most of your Knowledge Base from your public website, watch the scan run, and know what happens when you want to run it again.

Filling nine kinds of knowledge file by hand is a long afternoon. Business research shortens it: you give unpitch your company website, it reads your public pages, and it writes what it can support into your Knowledge Base for you to check. What you get back is a draft with its sources attached, not a finished Knowledge Base.

Starting a scan

Where the form appears depends on what is already on the shelf.

  • An empty Knowledge Base opens on the activation board headed Start with your business context, with the website field built into it.
  • Anywhere else, use the Business research button in the header or on the empty state. It opens a popover headed Research your business.

Type your company address into the website field. The placeholder is yourcompany.com, and you do not need to include https://. Submitting it empty gives you Enter your company website.

Press Start business research. The button reads Starting research… while the run is accepted.

Watch the progress list, or leave. The line under it says so: This keeps working if you leave — the page updates itself when it lands.

What it reads

Public pages only. There is no login, nothing private is read, and the line under the form states the boundary: Public pages only · Every finding keeps a verified excerpt · You approve the result.

The excerpt part matters. Every claim research writes down keeps a quote from the page it came from, and that quote is attached to the field it supports, so you can judge the claim without leaving the review queue.

While it runs

The Knowledge Base itself shows the progress, in three steps.

StepReads while runningReads when done
1Finding the pages that matterWebsite sources captured
2Organizing business contextCompany context added
3Matching relevant buyer personas

On an empty Knowledge Base you get the full card, headed Research is queued before a worker picks it up and Research is in progress once it starts. On a Knowledge Base that already has files, the same status appears as a compact strip in the header reading Research queued or Researching followed by the domain. Either way the page refreshes itself as the run advances and when it lands.

What it fills in

A successful scan writes two things.

Knowledge files, covering seven of the nine types: Positioning, Offering, ICP segment, Alternative, Proof, Objection and Voice. Market change and Document files are never created by research. If you want them, create them yourself.

Recommended buyer personas, waiting on the Personas screen as starting points.

A successful scan can also rename your workspace to the company name it identified.

Some fields are deliberately left alone even when research fills the rest of their file. An Alternative's Observed reasons won and Observed reasons lost, and an Objection's Underlying concern, come out of conversations you have had, not out of a website. They stay empty until you write them.

Everything else lands in the review queue. The queue is a request for your attention and not a holding pen: what research wrote is already in your Knowledge Base, and on ICP segment files it already grounds the personas you build.

Running it again later

Business research is included with the account and costs no credits. What is limited is how many times you can run it: two accepted runs in total, which is one first attempt plus one replacement after a failure. A run that finishes ends the allowance even if you are unhappy with what it found, so the way to improve a disappointing result is to correct it in review rather than to scan again.

A few things do not use up an attempt. Pressing Skip on the board only dismisses the board and leaves the offer behind the smaller Business research button. Stopping a run yourself is forgiven once, and the screen tells you when your included research is still unused.

When the allowance is spent, every research affordance disappears rather than failing after you type a URL. No board, no Business research button, no retry. An empty Knowledge Base falls back to Create your first knowledge file and you build it by hand.

When a scan does not finish

Two failures look different on screen, because the fix is different.

The website could not be read. Nothing readable was found at the address you gave. The notice offers Change website, which takes you to the setup screen so you can correct it.

Research did not finish. The problem was on unpitch's side, not your site's. The offer comes back, with the popover now headed Try business research again.

A run you stopped yourself is not reported as a failure at all. The offer returns as though you had not started.

A later scan never overwrites knowledge a person has reviewed. The popover footer says it: Public pages only · Research never overwrites human-reviewed knowledge. Confirming something in review is what makes it safe from being replaced.
