Adding and filling knowledge files
Create a knowledge file of the right type, fill its fields, and attach the page and excerpt that back each point.
Research does not create everything, and it does not know what you learned on a call last week. When you need a file that is not on the shelf, or a field that is still empty, you write it yourself.
Creating a file
Press New in the Knowledge Base header. The dialog is headed Add structured knowledge and explains the choice: Pick the business entity you are adding. Foundations open the one canonical entry; libraries can hold several concrete entries.
Every card carries its cardinality, so you can pick without guessing.
- Foundation · one per workspace is on Positioning and Voice.
- Library · one per real entity is on Offering, ICP segment, Alternative, Proof, Objection and Market change. Make one per real product, segment, competitor, story or objection.
- Material · add as needed is on Document, the free-form type for a brief, a transcript or pasted context you want indexed now and structured later.
If a Foundation already exists, its card reads Open and takes you to the existing file. Trying to create a second one anyway returns Your workspace already has one of these — open it instead. If the dialog could not check whether one exists, the card is grayed and reads Unavailable, offering neither. Reload and try again. A failed creation shows the toast Could not create the file.
A new file opens with its title already in edit mode, so your first keystroke renames it off Untitled …. Positioning and Voice are named by their type and skip that step.
Filling in the fields
Click into any field and type. Each line is a point, and pressing Enter starts the next one. The menu on a point offers Regular point and Numbered point to change how it reads, and Move up and Move down to reorder it within its field.
An empty field is fine. When your cursor is in one it reads Add what you know — or leave it for later, and the only nudge you get is a quiet line at the foot of the document naming which fields are still empty.
Some fields are not plain text.
- Switching forces on an ICP segment file is four columns: Push, Pull, Anxiety and Habit. Each has an
Add…box, and Enter adds the item. - Dates on a Market change file are free text, so
e.g. Q3 2025is an acceptable answer. - Applies to ICP segments on a Proof file links to your actual ICP segment files. If you have not made any it reads
No ICP segments to reference yet.A link whose target has gone shows a Missing file chip, and clicking it removes the link.
The Field guide on the right follows your cursor. For the field you are in it shows What belongs here, a Good example, and a Not this example of the near-miss that field keeps attracting. Below those, Used by names what reads this file type today and Coming names what will. Hide it with the field guide toggle when you want the room.
There is no Save button. Every field commits on its own as you type or when you leave it, and the header is your only feedback: Saved, Saving… or Not saved. If it says Not saved, the text is on your screen but not stored, and you will also get the toast Could not save your changes. Copy it somewhere before you navigate away. If someone else edited the same file, you get Someone else edited this file — reload and try your change again.
Citing sources
A point with a source behind it is worth more than one without. Hover or focus a point, or a field heading, and a Cite chip appears. It opens the citation panel.
Press Add citation and fill both parts. Source URL — acme.io/… takes the page the claim came from, and Exact excerpt that supports this point takes the words on that page that support it. Press Cite source to attach it.
The form refuses incomplete evidence:
Paste the page this came from.when the URL is empty.Only http and https links can be attached.when the link is not a web address.Paste the exact excerpt that supports this point.when the excerpt is empty.
If the same page already backs something else in this file, use Copy an existing citation in this file to attach it in one click rather than retyping it.
A citation belongs to the point or field heading you attached it to, not to the file. A field holds at most ten: past that you get This field is holding the maximum of 10 citations — unlink one to add another. The Citations · N button in the header lists everything cited in the file, grouped by page, and a link stored without a quote shows as Linked without an excerpt. Removing one there removes it from the point it was on.
