Version history

You rewrote a message three times, the second version was better, and you want it back. History is where it is. It opens a Time Machine over the canvas: a list of frozen versions on one side and the version itself filling the canvas, drawn exactly the way the live document is drawn.

When a version is frozen

Versions are not made by saving. Autosave keeps one live draft up to date and does not stack copies behind it.

A version is frozen when you run a Quality Check or a Simulation. The check needs a fixed copy of the text to read, and that copy is kept. This has two consequences worth holding onto:

• The History button does not appear in the header at all until the document has at least one version. On a document you have written but never checked, there is nothing to look back at.
• There is no manual "save a version" control, and no way to freeze one on demand. Running a check is how a version comes into being.

Reading the version list

The list is headed Version history. Its top row is Current, with Editing now underneath: that is your live, editable draft. Below it, versions are grouped under date headings starting with Today, and each row carries a version number and a time of day, such as v3 at 14:20.

That is all a row carries. There are no version names, no pinning, and no way to label one. You identify a version by when it was frozen and by reading it.

Scrolling down pages in older versions thirty at a time, announced as Loading older versions…. If that fetch fails, a clickable Couldn't load older versions. Retry appears at the foot of the list.

Looking at a frozen version

Select a row and that version fills the canvas as a card, with the older cards dimmed and stacked behind it. A chip appears in the breadcrumb reading History · v3 for whichever version you are on, and the card's footer reads Read-only snapshot.

You cannot type into a frozen version. Anything you want to change has to come forward to the live draft first.

Two things you might see on a version: grey placeholder bars, which mean the content is still loading and resolves on its own, and This version had no content., which means the document really was empty when that version was frozen.

To get back to your draft, select Current in the list, press Esc, click outside the stack, or press History again. If a menu or dialog happens to be open, Esc closes that first and History stays where it is.

Bringing an earlier version back

The footer of a frozen version has one button: Use as current. It copies that version's text over your live draft.

It is a copy forward, not a rewind. The draft you were on is kept as another saved version, so nothing is deleted, and the version you copied from stays where it was in the list. While the copy runs, the card is disabled and the button shows a spinner so it cannot be pressed twice.

When it lands, History closes, your draft holds the older text, and a dark bar appears at the bottom right reading Previous current saved, with an Undo link and a dismiss cross.

If the copy fails you get a short message beside the button, such as Could not update Current. Please try again. In the one ambiguous case, where unpitch cannot tell whether the write landed, the page simply reloads onto whatever your real current draft is, rather than claiming success or failure.

Results and the version they came from

A result in the panel beside your draft belongs to the text it was run on. Once you edit past that, a notice pins itself above the result reading Document changed, with the body "Results are from the previous version." and a re-run button beside it. The findings are still readable, they just describe an earlier wording.
